Why the 2020 Toyota Supra will Change the Car Culture as we Know It.

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past week, the big news in the car industry is all about the 2020 Toyota Supra. It will be the first Supra sold in the United States in more than 21 years. Whether you love it or hate it, here is what you need to know about the JDM legend.
- 335 horsepower
- 332 lb-ft torque
- Turbocharged inline 6 B58 motor… same as the BMW Z4
- Automatic 8 speed is only transmission offered
- 3,397 lbs gross weight
- Top speed limited to 155mph
- Shares same platform as BMW Z4
- Starting price at $50,920
So lets talk about the glaring facts right off of the bat. An automatic 8 speed, almost identical to the BMW Z4, and only staring at 335hp. Since the reveal that the new Supra would only be offered in an automatic rather than both auto and manual, gearheads have been crying everywhere, including myself. We all know the automatic transmission is faster in every way, but having the ability to drive a manual truly bonds a person to the car. However the boss of the new Supra build understands how much a manual option is wanted saying, “Of course, the manual transmission has been in the development process, I don’t want to sound to business-y, but I also need to support the 86. Looking at the role of the 86 and the role of the Supra, I want to differentiate, make sure they each have their own identity,” he said. “If the Supra had a manual transmission, there’s nowhere for the 86 to go.” While this makes complete sense, and most people should be able to understand his point, it still does not help the fact that a manual is not offered. This does beg to question however, are we nearing the end of the road for the GT-86 (BRZ)?

The bones of this car are strictly BMW. As seen in the pictures, much of the Supra is identical to the BMW Z4, even as far as the engine bay positioning. Other then the engine cover and the Supra’s lack of braces between the strut towers and the front radiator support. Most of the components are located in the same spots.

The throttle body, BorgWarner turbocharger, stability control module and even the air conditioning lines, all have BMW written on them

As we can see, Toyota is not doing much to hide the fact the car is basically a BMW. Looking underneath of the Supra, we continue to spot the similarities between the two. The black aerodynamic guides bolted to the lower control arm, are the same as the BMW 3 series.

Continuing to spot the differences go on and on. From the brake cooling system, to the exhaust, to more suspension components this car is an absolute BMW shell. I am not going to go into any more detail on this as this article is not to show the similarities between the two, rather than to point out they are similar.
Moving on lets discuss the 335hp, the B58 motor puts out. The amazing part is that this motor is actually tuned down, as the BMW Z4 (the same motor) has 355hp available. As we take a look back however at Japanese classics, we see that they always come under powered, only then using the aftermarket scene to show there true potential. Look at the GT86 for example. This car has been released since 2012… and for 7 years customers have been begging for a turbocharged option, never to get one. Not even the TRD version. This car has made roughly 205hp since the beginning. A car extremely underpowered, but yet is an icon in the car scene today. Why? because of the massive aftermarket performance. You can see a 1000hp GT86 in quite a few places now a days, people building the cars to there own specs. Even in Formula Drift where this car has a huge following. With talking about the aftermarket scene, that leads me into my whole point on why the 2020 Toyota Supra will be an absolute incredible car to own.

The year is 2023, the car world is on a new age simply because of the Supra. The old iconic JDM legend has resurrected the car scene from old. Mazda reinvents a new RX7,RX8, RX9? and brings back their old classic. Possibly a new version of the Nissan GTR? Only time will tell, but the Supra will bring back the love of the old car world. The beauty of the new Supra is this… although the car has the bones of a BMW, it is still a Supra, the legendary Supra. The aftermarket scene will be thriving with this car. The amount of customization offered will be second to none. From some incredible body kits, to some insane engine builds, to the style of the car overall, the builds will be unlimited. Greatly appreciated by going with the B58 and coupling it with the 8 speed automatic transmission, is the reliability of the two. The B58 has mainly had electrical problems in the past, but with some time to work on them and better understand them now, the motor is more reliable. It can also hold a great amount of power while still being on stock internals, allowing us to truly push the boundaries on what will work. The 8 speed auto transmission has been very successful and is a good platform to use to build and hold power with as well.

In all, the Supra will be a very successful car once again for Toyota. With a 50k price tag, yes you can get a lot more power and performance out of something else, but at the end of the day it is not a Supra. In a few years the aftermarket scene will completely change this car in every way. Just take a look at the body kit pictured above. Whether you love the car or hate the car, you must respect it for what it is, and I am very excited and optimistic for the future of this car.
